a roundup of the best value, filling menu items that islanders love
There’s many things we love about MV, but the cost of food isn’t one of them. The prices often make it difficult for some travelers to afford staying on the island, and year-round islanders to even travel off island for their grocery hauls. So we asked locals what their favorite meal meal under $15 was, and compiled a list for you! Hopefully this serves as a resource to make great food accessible to all.
I’ll start with the sandwiches…
1. Jerk Chicken Wrap at Winston’s Kitchen
We loveeee Winston’s rotating specials and their value is unmatched. Tucked away in Oak Bluffs harbor, the location makes popping in on your way to the ferry quick, and their variety makes it very popular. We suggest the Jerk Chicken Wrap, but the BLTs and breakfast sandwiches are loved by many and also under $15.
2. Italian Sub at Mo’s Lunch
Locals swear by Mo’s for their hearty portions and high quality food. Lunch sandwiches for $15 are their speciality - we love the pork, Italian, and I’ve heard great things about the tuna melt too. Tucked away from the action at the PA Club, it’s great to see the rotating specials they’ve got each week. Portions are always big enough to share!
3. Fish Sandwich at John’s Fish Market
John’s is a crowd favorite for their Obama Burger, but the Fish Sandwich is an incredible value!
4. Turkey Gobbler at Life at Humphrey’s
No matter the time of year, this meal will always leave you full!
5. Chicken Shawarma at Catboat Coffee Co
The Beef Katfa, Salads and Falafel are amongst other $15 grab and go options.
6. Falafel Wrap at MV Food Truck
Tucked away behind the ice arena, this is a good pick and less likely to have a huge line.
7. Chicken Caesar Salad at Edgartown Pizza
This is a massive amount of food, nearly enough for a family. During high season, there’s a rotating $10 special at MV Salads you can look into as well!
8. Brazilian Plate at Scottish Bakehouse
Locals also love the coconut tofu and breakfast sandwich, you’ll have leftovers.
9. Jerk Pork at Vineyard Caribbean
This will definitely give you more than one portion!
10. Rice Bowls at Tony’s Market
We’ve heard these are loaded with vegetables and protein for a custom, healthy pick.
11. Chicken Fingers and Fries at Gio’s Clam Bar
Slices of pizza and even more options on this menu make it a great options for families followed by a picnic in Ocean Park.
12. Margherita Pizza at Great Harbor Market
For $15 you can get a 12 inch Neapolitan-Style Pizza. Locals suggest you upgrade to the 12x16 Grandma-Style Pizza and split it with someone for an even better value! Other great value pizza spots in Vineyard Haven not mentioned in this post are Rocco’s and Porto.
13. Meat Pies at Ackee Tree
At only $3.50, these are a great buy as you head out of Vineyard Haven.
14. Turkey Chili with Cornbread at Waterside Market
Regardless of the time of year this is a filling meal on your way to the ferry.
15. Special of the Day at MV Hospital
I saved this one for last because it’s many islander’s favorite..but likely not the first choice destination for a visitor. The hospital cafeteria is open to the public and offers fresh made meals as cheap as $5. Definitely a trade secret!
