🔖 Digital Resources MV folks should know about
A few of my favorite Martha's Vineyard-focused sites and resources
Today I want to share the places where I draw inspiration every week. These online resources are close to my heart whether I’m on or off-island…
Here’s what’s in the bookmarks bar on my browser1:
🍽️ What’s Open MV
This website aggregates all of the restaurants that are open or closed in real time, organized by town. It’s updated regularly with the option to report a business as closed, and as the season turns the owner of the site compiles a list of opening and closing dates. The author does a great job on her Facebook page sharing local business updates and restaurant specials too.
📻 MVY Radio’s Online Streaming
I love MVY Radio- the news updates and the wide array of music. It’s such a nostalgic public radio station. When I’m away from the island I find it to be such soothing background to listen to, so you can tune in from afar here.
🎥 GOMV’s Live YouTube Stream
GoMV live streams multiple locations on Martha’s Vineyard year-round. Don’t feel like driving to Menemsha for sunset? They’ve got you. Wake up early and want to watch the sunrise over Edgartown Harbor? Tune in! We keep the live stream on as background in our house so often that our visitors have come to expect it now.
💸 MV Stuff for Sale Facebook Group
There are a variety of Martha’s Vineyard Facebook Groups that all have their pros and cons. My personal favorite is the Stuff for Sale group - I love the sustainable approach of giving items a second life and helping neighbors out.
📸 Aesthetic Photo and Video Accounts -
Any time of year, particularly in the depths of winter, you want to be reminded of what a privilege it is to live on Martha’s Vineyard and the coastal charm it brings. The following accounts have made me smile this Summer:
The Real Edgartown and Baggage Girls bring the Gen Z video content
Michael Blanchard’s professional photography Facebook page gives incredible drone views and unique landscape perspectives year round.
✉️ Email Newsletters I love
Some organizations on the island are incredibly consistent and meticulous with their newsletters: Agricultural Society, Circuit Arts, Featherstone, MV Film Society, MV Museum, OB Library and the Oak Bluffs Association all write a weekly email that spotlights little known events happening.
MVY.com’s Chamber of Commerce’s Monthly Newsletter also rounds up fun things happening or new organizations to support.
📱MVacay Events App
On a weekly basis, we update the events and save the dates in our app, which also syncs with a few other mobile calendars. I periodically add MVacay guides for on-the-go access. Yes, it’s our app, but I’d use it every day even if it wasn’t!
We also have three other apps - MV Bucket List, MV Ferries and MV Wordplay
📋 Useful Aggregated Lists
Sometimes people come along and say “hey, let’s put all this info in one place” - Will you be my BFFs? Those people have done some GOOD work. Here are some of my favorite “Big Lists”:
All of the Trails - MV Trails App
All of the Yoga Classes
All of the Black Owned Businesses
All of the LGBTQ+ Owned Businesses
All of the NonProfits
Great list of Event Vendors
Transparency is paramount for me - gatekeeping serves no one. So, tell me in the comments: how do you know what’s happening? How do you feel connected to MV while you’re away?
Disclaimer: this is a non-exhaustive list of digital resources. Of course, there are tons of printed guides you can get in person. This is just my personal list of most-visited sites and it is in no means meant to be a guide to everything.
This article gave me new ideas about how to stay connected while "off island". Thank you!!
