What impressed me most was how thoughtful the experience felt from start to finish. There were so many little details, the crew made a point to include every child, and parents could mostly sit back and enjoy the ride.

Here’s everything to know if you’re thinking about setting sail:

🏴‍☠️ About Pirate Adventures

Pirate Adventures of Martha’s Vineyard operates the Sea Gypsy X, a custom-built 40-foot pirate ship that sails from Oak Bluffs Harbor. The experience is designed specifically around kids rather than being a traditional boat cruise with a few children’s activities added on.

Before even boarding, kids are transformed into the ship’s newest pirate crew with pirate names, face painting, costumes and pirate training. Once underway, the group works through an interactive treasure-hunt story involving a treasure map, a message in a bottle, water cannons, a rival pirate and eventually a sunken treasure chest that the kids help pull from the water.

The full experience lasts about 90 minutes, with approximately 20 minutes of pirate prep on land and 70 minutes aboard the boat.

⚓ Our Pirate Adventure

Check-in was incredibly friendly and personalized. Before boarding, the girls got into character with pirate vests, face/hand painting and their new pirate gear. Once we were on the boat, there was very little downtime.

They were using both their brains and their bodies, and the activities changed frequently enough that even my three-year-old stayed engaged. The team also seemed very aware of making sure every child got a turn and felt included. We had a good-sized group aboard, but it never felt overcrowded or chaotic.

And as a parent, this was refreshingly easy. We were obviously still responsible for our children, but the crew really took over the entertainment. Rather than spending the entire outing trying to keep the girls occupied, we could mostly sit back, watch them participate and enjoy being out on the water.

The boat ride itself was mostly steady during our trip, and although there are water cannons involved in the adventure, we never got wet. And the girls were thrilled with what they came home with: treasure, a sword, bandana and eye patch. Between the boat ride, live entertainment, activities and take-home goodies, it felt like a really good value.

It also has the personal feel of a small, family-run business. Nothing about our visit felt thrown together or generic; from check-in through the final treasure hunt, it felt like they had really considered what would keep kids engaged and make the experience special.

🗒️ Visit Planning

📍 Location: Dockside Marketplace & Marina, 12 Circuit Avenue Extension, Oak Bluffs. Check in inside Dockside Marketplace at the Treasure Chest Pirate Shop before heading outside to the Pirates in Training staging area.

⏰ Length: Approximately 90 minutes total—about 20 minutes of pirate prep on land and 70 minutes at sea.

🧒 Ages: Pirate Adventures recommends the experience for ages 3–10. Based on our visit with a three- and four-year-old, I personally think ages 5–7 are probably the sweet spot, although both of my younger girls were able to participate and had a great time.

💲 2026 Pricing: $44 per child or adult; $25 for infants under 12 months. Everyone aboard needs a ticket. Pirate Packs: $15 add-on including a Pirate Adventures bandana, foam sword and eye patch. Vests and sashes used during the adventure are loaned for the trip.

📅 2026 Schedule: Sailings are currently offered Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday (some Sundays), with up to three departures per day depending on demand. The last date of sail for 2026 is September 6. Check the online booking calendar for the most current sailing times and availability, it’s typically 9:15a, 11:45a and 2pm.

🎟️ Reservations: Advance reservations are required, although walk-ups may be accepted when space is available. Plan to arrive by your listed booking time—the pirate prep begins before the boat departs.

🅿️ Parking: There is no dedicated Pirate Adventures parking, and summer parking around Oak Bluffs Harbor can be difficult. Give yourself extra time to find a spot; they cannot hold the boat for late arrivals.

🚽 Bathroom: There is no bathroom aboard the boat, so definitely make a bathroom stop inside Dockside Marketplace before sailing.

👶 Strollers: Strollers cannot go aboard because space is limited, but they can be stored at the pirate shop.

🧴 What to Bring: Water and sunscreen are recommended. You can bring small snacks and drinks, but no glass. A sweatshirt or light layer is also smart since it can feel cooler once you’re out on the water.

🌦️ Weather: They sail in many conditions, including light rain, but trips can be cancelled for heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds or other conditions the captain considers unsafe.

💡 MVacay’s Edgartown Bachelorette Tips

Book your dinners early, restaurants are small so large groups are tricky. Plan your outfits around dinners and going out because Edgartown leans more dressed up. Everything is walkable, but spread out just enough that comfortable shoes help and you may even want to rent a bike.

🛬 Getting Here + Where to Stay

• Arrivals: arrive via ferry in Oak Bluffs. You’ll likely be in walking distance of where you’re staying from the ferry port.

• Cars: You do not need a car if you’re staying in town. You may need to ride share if you arrive via plane or decide to go to a different town.

• Where to Stay: Stay within walking distance of Circuit Ave, the harbor, or Ocean Park. A reminder that there are very few rentals for large groups, and many of them have 3 or 7 day minimums. So book early! Our preferred hotels are Summercamp, Oak Bluffs Inn, Morgan, or an AirBnB walkable to Circuit Ave.

✅ What to Book Before You Arrive

The advantage OB is that thee is a lot that accommodates walk-ins. However, to have a plan I suggest you pick 1–2 of these and build Saturday around it:

🏝️ What First-Time Visitors Should Know in 2026

Martha’s Vineyard is a small island about seven miles off Cape Cod, and the only way here is by ferry or plane. Each town has its own personality, the summer season is short but packed, and many restaurants and shops are seasonal.

In 2026 expect big summer crowds on weekends and quieter weekdays. June through September will be the most active months for week-long stays and day trips. May and October are our shoulder season with great weekends, calmer travel, and a popular time for weddings.

🚢 How to Get Here (2026 Ferry + Flight Tips)

Most visitors take the Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole, which is the cheapest and most frequent option. Passenger tickets don’t require reservations, but car spots do, and they book months in advance. If you’re walking on: You’re fine, just show up.

Other ferry options:

• Best for Day Trips: 🚤 Island Queen from Falmouth

• Best for Bringing a Car: 🚗 Steamship Authority from Falmouth (Woods Hole)

  • Book immediately. Car decks sell out long before summer.

You don’t always need a car, it depends on where you stay.

If you plan to stay in one town: No car needed. Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are very walkable and have taxis, bikes, and the VTA bus.

If you want to explore up-island (Aquinnah, Chilmark, West Tisbury): A car helps. Uber/Lyft exist but are limited and surge-priced on busy weekends.

Options once you arrive:

• VTA public bus (connects all major towns)

• Rental cars

• Bikes + e-bikes

• Taxis (more reliable in the summer)

The easiest towns for first-time visitors are the three “down-island” towns:

🖤 Visiting for Black Cultural Events in 2026

Martha’s Vineyard is a longtime gathering place for Black visitors, especially in Oak Bluffs near Inkwell Beach. The biggest draws each year include Juneteenth celebrations, Legacy Week/HBCU gatherings, the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF), and the MV Black Book Festival. The busiest weeks for Black travelers are late July through mid-August, with most events centered in Oak Bluffs, Union Chapel, and The Strand. Expect panels, beach meetups, parties, author talks, wellness events, and major film premieres throughout this stretch.

These weeks book up very fast. If 2026 is your year, reserve Oak Bluffs lodging, ferry car spots, and key restaurant reservations well in advance. Staying in OB keeps you close to Inkwell traditions and many Black-owned shops, restaurants, and community gathering spaces that anchor these celebrations.

These are the tips that make or break a first visit:

If you’re in the beginning stages of planning your trip, start by deciding how long you’ll stay and how you’ll get to MV If you’re coming for 2–7 days, I suggest you:

• Rent a House: I highly recommend renting a home. The best-case scenario is something walking distance to downtown Edgartown or Oak Bluffs. Hotel rooms here are often small and not ideal for families. Hotels + Housing Guide

• Bring a Car: If you do, you can pack car seats, snacks, scooters, and the pack-n-play. Book your ferry months early so you can get a time that works with your kiddo’s schedule. If bringing a car isn’t doable, try to stay walking distance to town with a solid stroller setup.

I know it might be tempting to try to order or mail items to your destination. I would advise against that because Amazon and other mail delivery services are often delayed, and will not get there in the quoted amount of time. Also, hotels and home rentals can not guarantee they can store packages until your arrival. If you’re in a pinch try using Island Runner to pick something up from a locker or store in Falmouth for you.

🦟 Be Prepared for Bugs + Ticks

MV is beautiful, but tick-borne illnesses are common. Ticks live in grassy areas, wooded trails, and even beach paths. Use child-safe bug spray daily, and do an evening tick check. Nymphs and larvae can be as small as the tip of a pen and are easy to miss. Natural Bug Spray + Tick Prevention Guide

🛒 Save on Food: Bring Groceries

Island grocery prices can be steep. Bring shelf-stable groceries and snacks, or stop on the mainland before your ferry. Market Basket, Shaw’s, and Aldi are all convenient stops. Pack a cooler with milk, juice, yogurt, and easy kid foods so you’re not forced into an immediate supermarket run when you arrive. Grocery Guide

🧥 Pack Wisely for the Weather

Bring a pair of pants for each kid, even in summer. Vineyard mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially if you're used to hot summers. But I don’t mind buying a new Black Dog hoodie every summer!

🗺️ Group Activities by Town

Martha’s Vineyard has six towns, and summer traffic can make driving slow. To avoid constant shuffling (and car seat meltdowns), plan your activities one town at a time. This minimizes travel time and helps keep outings manageable. Kids Activities Guide

🏖️ Choose Toddler-Friendly Beaches

Look for calm water and easy access. Joseph Sylvia State Beach (between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown) is a favorite for its gentle surf and soft sand.
