Book your dinners early, restaurants are small so large groups are tricky. Plan your outfits around dinners and going out because Edgartown leans more dressed up. Everything is walkable, but spread out just enough that comfortable shoes help and you may even want to rent a bike.

• Cars: You do not need a car if you’re staying in town. You may need to ride share if you arrive via plane or decide to go to a different town.

• Where to Stay: Stay within walking distance of Circuit Ave, the harbor, or Ocean Park. A reminder that there are very few rentals for large groups, and many of them have 3 or 7 day minimums. So book early! Our preferred hotels are Summercamp, Oak Bluffs Inn, Morgan, or an AirBnB walkable to Circuit Ave.

• Basics: Farm Neck is an 18-hole course in Oak Bluffs with public tee times available. Public players may reserve up to 3 days in advance.

• 2026 season: April 17–November 29, 2026.

• 2026 pricing: Roughly $80–$350 depending on season, day, and whether you’re playing 9 holes, 18 holes, or twilight.

• What’s included: Electric carts and range balls are included in green fees.

• Range / practice: Range access is only for members and public players warming up before their tee time on the day of play, so this is not the best answer for someone who only wants to go to the range.

• Lessons: Half-hour private $80; one-hour private $140; one-hour semi-private for 2 $200; additional student +$50.

Mink Meadows Golf Club

• Best for: Beginners, casual golfers, locals, repeat rounds, and anyone looking for public range access.

• Basics: Mink Meadows is a semi-private facility in Vineyard Haven/West Chop that can be played as either a 9-hole or 18-hole experience. Non-members can reserve tee times up to 2 days in advance.

• 2026 season: Open year-round, weather permitting.

• 2026 pricing: Roughly $44–$160 for greens fees depending on season and whether you’re playing 9 or 18 holes; cart fees are extra, and early bird, twilight, and junior pricing are also available.

• Tee time notes: The reservation system runs from 7 AM to 12 AM daily. Single golfers cannot make reservations in advance, but they can access the course on a space-available basis. Cancellations can be made 24 hours ahead without charge.

• Range / practice: Mink Meadows has a 165-yard warm-up range open April 1–October 31. Small bucket $8, large bucket $12.

• Lessons: Private half-hour $70; private one hour $120; private two-hour playing lesson $250; additional students $75 each; clinics $30.

Royal and Ancient Chappaquiddick Links

• Best for: People who want a quirky, memorable, very Vineyard golf experience.

• Basics: Royal Chappy is a historic 9-hole course on Chappaquiddick with public-facing tee times/day passes, club rentals, pull-cart rentals, and transportation available from the Chappy Ferry with advance notice.

• Booking notes: Tee times are limited by the hour, and your reservation allows you to begin anytime within that one-hour window. Transportation from the Chappy Ferry is available with 1-day advance notice. Islanders can get $25 off with proof of year-round residency using the code listed on the site.

• 2026 pricing: Roughly $65–$80, though this could change

• Range / practice: A public practice range is not listed on the club’s site.

• Membership notes: Royal Chappy also sells memberships. The current public-facing shop pages show an individual membership at $1,400 and a family membership at $2,900, with discounted $40 guest rates for up to four guests.

• Travel Logistics note: Royal Chappy is on Chappaquiddick, so playing there comes with a little more built-in logistics than the other courses. You’ll need to account for getting across on the Chappy Ferry, and if you’re bringing a car, bike, or other gear, that can add both time and cost depending on how you travel. Royal Chappy also notes that transportation from the Chappy Ferry can be arranged with 1 day’s advance notice

Edgartown Golf Club

• Basics: Edgartown Golf Club is a private golf club in Edgartown. The official site says it is open to members and their guests year-round, weather permitting.

• Public access: This is not a practical option for most visitors or casual local golfers unless they are a guest of a member or are participating in one of the annual benefit tournaments the club says are open to all.

Vineyard Golf Club

• Basics: Vineyard Golf Club is a private Edgartown club. Its official membership page says membership is by invitation only and only people nominated by existing members are eligible to apply.

• Public access: The club’s guest information page makes clear that access is for guests of members.

A Few Quick Hits Before You Book

Golf on Martha’s Vineyard is a limited-inventory sport compared to bigger resort destinations, so summer access can tighten up quickly even at the public-facing courses. Farm Neck allows public reservations up to 3 days in advance, while Mink Meadows allows non-members to reserve up to 2 days in advance.

“Public” also does not mean every golf amenity is open in the same way. Farm Neck’s driving range is only available to members and public players warming up before their tee time that day, while Mink Meadows publishes bucket pricing for range use and is the clearest public practice option.

For larger groups, advance booking may be possible in some cases, but summer options are limited. Mink Meadows says outing requests for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations can be made in advance, though access is very restricted during peak season.

If you’re not bringing your own clubs, plan for rental costs to add roughly $45–$90 depending on the course and length of play. Not every course publishes rental pricing as clearly as green fees, so it’s smart to confirm directly when booking.

🎓 MV Libraries 101

• Do they work together? The six libraries are not one islandwide library system. Each town library has its own trustees, staffing, budget, policies, and programming, but all six share CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing), which makes borrowing/requesting materials across libraries easier.

• Who can get a card? In general, Massachusetts residents and property owners can get cards for free, visitors can usually get a temporary card for a one-time $10 fee (with a 10-item limit).

• I’m worried about fines! Island libraries moved to a fine-free model for overdue items starting January 1, 2020, lost/damaged fees for items still apply.

• So are they all the same? The biggest variations are in their policies on room reservations (online form vs phone), meeting room rules, Library of Things categories/restrictions.

  I suggest you do! Many shuttle setups don’t accommodate bikes the way you’d hope (limited spots, E-bikes are too heavy).

• Do ferries allow dogs? Which ones?
  Steamship Authority allows pets with restrictions (leash/carrier rules, limited areas, and you’re responsible for cleanup). For others check operator rules.

• What happens if there’s a cancellation?
  You’ll usually be rebooked or refunded depending on operator policy. The best habit: screenshot your confirmation, check alerts early, and assume fast ferries cancel sooner than SSA in rough weather.

• If I’m flying into BOS vs PVD, what’s easiest?
  PVD: pairs cleanly with Quonset + Rhode Island Fast Ferry for a simple drive-to-boat day.

This is very normal for Martha’s Vineyard, and it doesn’t mean your trip is impossible.

Here’s what to try next:

🗓️ First, Know This About August Rentals

In peak summer, most Martha’s Vineyard homes are rented by the week - usually Saturday–Saturday, Sunday–Sunday, or Friday–Friday. It’s rare for owners to split a prime August week, especially for larger homes.

If you’re searching for a short stay, a mid-week visit, or one large house for a big group, you’ll hit “no availability” very quickly. If you’re traveling with a group, you may need to split into two smaller homes, book multiple hotel rooms, or adjust your dates to align with a full-week stay. Waiting for a host to open up a partial August week won’t work, and trying to book a one-night stay at a hotel won’t either.

🏡 Start With Local Rental Agencies (Not Airbnb)

This is the biggest thing visitors miss. Many Martha’s Vineyard homes are not listed on Airbnb, VRBO, or Google at all. They’re rented through local real estate agencies that handle weekly summer rentals directly.

If you’re striking out on Google and Airbnb, expanding your search to new, local platforms should be your first move, not your last.

📞 Pick Up the Phone

If online searching isn’t working, switch strategies. Call hotels and inns directly instead of relying on booking sites. Many hotels booking websites require 2–3 night minimums in August, which they may be able to waive if there’s a gap between stays. Email or call rental agencies with your exact dates and group size. Posting in local MV Facebook groups can help too (watch for scams and verify listings). Owners sometimes open dates after seeing demand. If you’re attending a wedding, festival, or event, ask the host if they have lodging leads or unused blocks.

🚢 Consider Staying Off-Island

If the Island is truly booked, staying in Falmouth or Woods Hole can still work. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes, and many people do this as a day-trip setup.

Practically speaking, this means planning around ferry schedules. First boats usually leave early in the morning, and the last ferries back typically depart between 9–10pm depending on the day and season. You’ll want lodging close to the ferry terminal, since there’s no all-day parking in Woods Hole. I suggest a hotel walking distance from Woods Hole - like Woods Hole Inn or Sands of Time Inn. If you need to drive from your hotel to the Steamship Parking lot, you’ll end up paying additional money for parking and time taking the shuttle to the terminal. This would not work if your obligations are in the evening on MV, but could work for during the day. It’s not for everyone, but it can save a trip that would otherwise be canceled.

🔄 Be Patient, Flexible, and Kind

Availability changes constantly as plans shift and cancellations happen. Being open to different towns (they’re so close! free buses between!), checking often, and asking kindly for flexibility goes a long way.

Bringing Your EV to MV

There’s been ongoing conversation (and policy tweaks) about damaged EVs boarding SSA vessels, tied to concerns about compromised batteries.

The 2026 Status: MV Times reported in 2025 that a damaged EV may be allowed to board if the owner provides documentation from an ASE-certified mechanic in the past 3 months stating it’s safe to travel. To ensure successful boarding:

• 📄 If your car was in an accident recently: the owner may need to provide documentation from a mechanic certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) noting that the vehicle is safe to travel.

• 🔋 Arrive with a comfortable charge buffer.

Note that hybrids DO count in damaged battery rules. The SSA’s electric vehicle policy is enforced by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England. This is why the policy can feel strict at boarding, it’s not just a customer service call.

🛠️ If something happens on-island

Plan for the possibility that repairs (or specialty EV service) may be more limited than what you’re used to on the mainland. This doesn’t need to be scary, it just means: don’t ignore warning lights and don’t run the battery into the ground repeatedly. Getting a quick sign-off from an ASE-certified mechanic in order to re-board the SSA back home may be harder here. If you get in an accident on-Island, you may need to get the car back to the mainland via R.M. Packer Company barge, which is very costly.

Charging Your EV on MV

🧠 Set realistic expectations

On MV, most charging is Level 2 “top-off while you’re parked” not quick highway-style fill-ups. A practical way to plan is to assume you’ll charge in smaller chunks, ideally while you’re already doing something else.

• Prices + rules change. Rates, time limits, and access can shift seasonally or without notice. Always double-check in your charging app before you plan around a specific station.

• “Ports” ≠ “available to the public.” Some locations list multiple ports, but a portion may be reserved, blocked, out of service, or actively used by town vehicles.

• Hotel chargers aren’t public by default. When a station is on hotel property, assume guest/patron use only unless the property confirms otherwise.

🧩 How to Plan Charging

🏡 If you’re staying overnight (best case)

• Prioritize lodging with charging access

• Overnight charging is the “secret weapon” on MV: you wake up ready and don’t spend your vacation hunting.

🕒 If you’re day-tripping

• Arrive with a buffer.

• Pick one intentional charge window (lunch + walk + quick top-off).

🗓️ If you’re here for a week

• Think: “little charges often” instead of one big dramatic charging session.

• Build one or two “charge-while-I’m-doing-X” habits into your routine.

🤝 EV charging etiquette on MV

This matters more in summer, when chargers feel limited.

• ✅ Move your car when you’re done charging. If you’re at 90–100%, move!

• ✅ Don’t treat an EV charger like “reserved parking.”

• ✅ If a spot is clearly in demand, charge what you need and go.

• ✅ If you’re using a public charger overnight (rarely ideal), be extra considerate.

💰 Cost Of Chargers

Is charging free on MV? Some stations may be paid and policies vary by location/network — assume it won’t be free, and confirm in the app before you plan around it. (PlugShare listings typically show this per station.)

🏠 Seasonal Homeowner Tips

If you’re a seasonal homeowner, home charging is the easiest upgrade you can make for potential renters.

• Mass Save has an EV charging equipment page for customers of certain MA utilities and points to rebates/info.

• National Grid’s MA EV Charging Upgrade Program describes rebates tied to installing a 240-volt outlet and eligible equipment.

🇺🇸 What is Mass250?

Mass250 is Massachusetts’ statewide 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. On Martha’s Vineyard, it won’t look like reenactments, but it’ll show up as talks, tours, exhibits, museum programming, and special events you can enjoy during a normal Vineyard trip. This guide is for anyone doing a broader MA trip (Boston + Cape) and considering MV as an add-on.

When to visit: Expect Mass250 activity to build during late spring through summer, with another peak in early fall as the exhibit season ramps up.

• Grey’s Raid Exhibit at MV MUseuem: The Week the Sheep Went Away / October 24, 2026 – May 2027

  • In September 1778, British troops under Major General Charles Grey arrived on Martha’s Vineyard and forced Islanders to surrender livestock and supplies. Over five days, approximately 10,000 sheep and 300 cattle were taken before the fleet departed. Designed specifically for children and families, this interactive exhibition explores how communities respond when powerful outsiders make demands—and how choices, communication, and logistics shape outcomes in moments of crisis.

And just to set expectations upfront: Martha’s Vineyard wasn’t a battlefield in the way Boston or Lexington/Concord were. But the Island absolutely played a role in early American life, connected to colonial trade, maritime routes, and a small but memorable set of Revolutionary-era stories.

🐑 Revolutionary War Context: The Sheep Raid Story (1778)

In September 1778, during the Revolutionary War, British forces led by Major General Charles Grey arrived at Martha’s Vineyard and demanded supplies under threat of destruction. The Island was forced to surrender livestock and provisions, including 10,000 sheep, plus cattle, weapons, and funds. This wasn’t a “battle” in the traditional sense, but a fun dose of MV history.

If you’re planning a girls weekend (friends, sisters, moms, milestone birthdays) and you want the scenery + charm without the crowds, long waits, and high-season pressure, April–May and September–October are the sweet spots.

This guide is designed for small groups (2–8 people) traveling for a quick weekend getaway (arriving Friday night and leaving Sunday afternoon) with most of the weekend spent in the down-island towns.

🌿 Why Shoulder Season Works So Well for a Girls Trip

Shoulder season is ideal for a girls trip because it’s the best of Martha’s Vineyard without the peak-summer chaos. There’s still plenty open, with enough restaurants and activities to fill a weekend without overplanning, but dinner plans are easier with less waiting. Lodging is also more available and often more affordable, so small groups can usually score better options, sometimes at much better rates than they’d find in the heart of summer.

This weekend style of trip is ideal for milestone birthdays, moms’ getaways or reset weekends, and friend groups who want food, shopping, and scenery rather than clubbing. It’s also perfect for repeat visitors who want a slower Vineyard vibe, and for first-timers who want the MV experience without the July and August intensity.

  • Memorable because: The most playful town (colorful, walkable, photo-friendly)

  • Hotels: Summercamp, Oak Bluffs Inn, Morgan, AirBnBs walkable to Circuit Ave

• ⛵ Edgartown

  • Best for: milestone weekends + elevated dinners

  • Memorable because: Most polished “special occasion” feel, good shopping density, harbor strolls + lighthouse views

• 🚗 Do you need a car?

  • For this trip style: no. If your goal is to do half a day in each down-island town, a car is more hassle than help. You might want a car if: your group has mobility concerns, you’re staying far outside town, you want full up-island exploring (not the goal here)

🏝️ What First-Time Visitors Should Know in 2026

Martha’s Vineyard is a small island about seven miles off Cape Cod, and the only way here is by ferry or plane. Each town has its own personality, the summer season is short but packed, and many restaurants and shops are seasonal.

In 2026 expect big summer crowds on weekends and quieter weekdays. June through September will be the most active months for week-long stays and day trips. May and October are our shoulder season with great weekends, calmer travel, and a popular time for weddings.

🚢 How to Get Here (2026 Ferry + Flight Tips)

Most visitors take the Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole, which is the cheapest and most frequent option. Passenger tickets don’t require reservations, but car spots do, and they book months in advance. If you’re walking on: You’re fine, just show up.

Other ferry options:

• Best for Day Trips: 🚤 Island Queen from Falmouth

• Best for Bringing a Car: 🚗 Steamship Authority from Falmouth (Woods Hole)

  • Book immediately. Car decks sell out long before summer.

• Closest to Airport Arrivals: 🛬 Rhode Island Fast Ferry (from near Providence)

If you’re flying, MVY Airport is easy and central. Flying into Boston and then bussing to the ferry adds about three hours each way.

🚗 How to Get Around the Island

You don’t always need a car, it depends on where you stay.

If you plan to stay in one town: No car needed. Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are very walkable and have taxis, bikes, and the VTA bus.

If you want to explore up-island (Aquinnah, Chilmark, West Tisbury): A car helps. Uber/Lyft exist but are limited and surge-priced on busy weekends.

Options once you arrive:

• VTA public bus (connects all major towns)

• Rental cars

• Bikes + e-bikes

• Taxis (more reliable in the summer)

🏨 Where to Stay on MV

The easiest towns for first-time visitors are the three “down-island” towns:

• Vineyard Haven: Central, calm, and open year-round. Great for convenience.

• Oak Bluffs: Colorful Gingerbread Houses, harbor views, nightlife, beaches, and easy walking. Most lively in summer. Includes Inkwell Beach + a lot of Black history.

• Edgartown: Classic New England charm with boutiques, dining, and harbor strolls.

🖤 Visiting for Black Cultural Events in 2026

Martha’s Vineyard is a longtime gathering place for Black visitors, especially in Oak Bluffs near Inkwell Beach. The biggest draws each year include Juneteenth celebrations, Legacy Week/HBCU gatherings, the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF), and the MV Black Book Festival. The busiest weeks for Black travelers are late July through mid-August, with most events centered in Oak Bluffs, Union Chapel, and The Strand. Expect panels, beach meetups, parties, author talks, wellness events, and major film premieres throughout this stretch.

These weeks book up very fast. If 2026 is your year, reserve Oak Bluffs lodging, ferry car spots, and key restaurant reservations well in advance. Staying in OB keeps you close to Inkwell traditions and many Black-owned shops, restaurants, and community gathering spaces that anchor these celebrations.
