Vineyard Grill (VH) – Formerly MV Tap, now under new ownership with a revised restaurant concept at Five Corners.

ESH (OB) – Newly opened in the former Dos Mas space on Circuit Ave following a renovation and updated concept.

MV Family Campground (VH) – Acquired by national resort operator Northgate Resorts, marking a major ownership change after decades of family ownership; no immediate changes are planned for the 2026 season.

Future General Store planned for the Sole building in Edgartown, expected in 2027

Offshore Ale (OB) potentially will expand into Notalot Farm Stand space in 2027.

Frankie’s Revival (VH → OB) – Now open on Circuit Ave with thrift and vintage finds.

Meshacket Commons (Edg) – New affordable year-round housing development in active rollout on Meshacket Road; rental and ownership applications have closed as the 40-home project moves toward its 2026 opening.

First Ferry Party (OB) – New annual kickoff event planned for May 14, 2026 to celebrate the start of the season.

InkWellness Fest – New wellness-focused festival concept with a community event planned near Inkwell Beach August 5, 2026.

Oak Bluffs Tennis Club – Revival efforts underway to bring back the historic club with its first Labor Day tennis tournament and June clinic as a partnership with East Chop Tennis Club.

HBCU Arts Festival - HBCU student performers visiting the week of 8/1–8/6

Mass250 - Special for 2026, MA is celebrating 250 years of independence, and MV played a small role in it. There will be special programing all summer.

Theatre on the Blue – New nonprofit focused on accessible theater programming.

Tick Free MV – New nonprofit launched to address tick-borne illness through deer population reduction efforts, research, and public education.

MV Tick Center - A new Tick Center is set to open next month through Martha’s Vineyard Medical, offering coordinated care for Lyme, alpha-gal, and other tick-borne illnesses

• Social Coast Mobile Bar — comes to your house for a cocktail class, easy and fun pre-dinner

• Private Chef (On Time Catering) — easiest way to do a group dinner without coordinating reservations

Get out:

• Mad Max Sailing Adventure — right out of Edgartown harbor, great for groups and afternoon sails

• Farm Institute Cooking Class — email them to schedule a group activity or ice cream making class

• Beach day at South Beach (Katama)— short bike ride from town

💡 MVacay’s Edgartown Bachelorette Tips

Book your dinners early, restaurants are small so large groups are tricky. Plan your outfits around dinners and going out because Edgartown leans more dressed up. Everything is walkable, but spread out just enough that comfortable shoes help and you may even want to rent a bike.

🛬 Getting Here + Where to Stay

• Arrivals: arrive via ferry in Oak Bluffs. You’ll likely be in walking distance of where you’re staying from the ferry port.

• Cars: You do not need a car if you’re staying in town. You may need to ride share if you arrive via plane or decide to go to a different town.

• If you want to experience Vineyard sailing without joining a club, public options like MV Ocean Academy and the Schooner Alabama offer a more approachable way in.

• Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and Edgartown Yacht Club are more exclusive, club-based sailing hubs with junior programs, adult sailing, and regatta ties, but they are not the same thing as broad public access points.

⛵ The Sailing Club Landscape on MV

The sailing scene on MV includes a mix of public programs, private clubs, race groups, and heritage organizations.

Sail Martha’s Vineyard was founded in 1992 to provide free maritime education to young Islanders and to preserve and protect the Island’s maritime heritage. It’s programming includes adult sailing instruction, support for competitive sailors, and other water-based programming. Sail MV also runs SailMobility, an on-the-water program for Islanders of all abilities, which adds an important accessibility layer to the Island’s sailing landscape.

At the same time, Vineyard sailing also includes a more traditional club world. Edgartown Yacht Club, established in 1905, remains one of the Island’s major sailing institutions and a major organizer of regattas. Vineyard Haven Yacht Club also has a strong junior and adult sailing presence. That more formal side is less inclusive, though it is longstanding and influential.

Holmes Hole Sailing Association is a separate local racing group based in Vineyard Haven that welcomes sailors of all skill levels; any monohull boat over 15 feet can join its race series, and VHYC also helps connect people to that scene through crewing and club-boat opportunities.

👧 Where Kids and Teens Can Learn to Sail

If there is one place where the Vineyard sailing ecosystem feels most alive and most reachable, it is youth programming.

Sail Martha’s Vineyard is the most straightforward public-facing option. Its programs include youth sailing instruction, beginner pathways, fall youth sailing, private lessons for all ages, and support for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School sailing team. Its broader mission is explicitly community-based, which makes it an important counterweight to the idea that sailing here is only for club kids or families already inside the scene.

Then there is Martha’s Vineyard Ocean Academy, which hosts youth voyages aboard Shenandoah. It has more than 30 years of experience serving ages 7–17, and Shenandoah has hosted hundreds of weeklong youth voyages over the past three decades. Its model is more immersive and voyage-based: living aboard, learning as crew, unplugging, and building confidence through time under sail.

Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and Edgartown Yacht Club both maintain youth sailing infrastructure for youth whose families are members of the clubs.

🧑 Where Adults Can Learn or Get Back Into It

Adult access is where the Vineyard sailing picture gets a little thinner. Sail Martha’s Vineyard is still one of the clearest places to start, with adult instruction and private lessons for all ages. Martha’s Vineyard Ocean Academy’s all-ages voyages can be another way in, especially for people more interested in the experience of sailing than formal instruction.

For adults who want more of a sailing experience than a formal lesson, Black Dog Tall Ships’ Schooner Alabama offers public sails out of Vineyard Haven and gives people a way to get out on the water without entering the club world.

Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and Edgartown Yacht Club also offer private adult lessons to members.

If you are visiting and just want a beautiful, low-pressure way onto the water, private sunset sails like Sail Magic Carpet or Catboat Charters are another easy entry point.

🏆 Regattas, Racing, and the Competitive Side

Sail Martha’s Vineyard’s Vineyard Cup Regatta is one of the clearest nonprofit/public-facing regatta anchors on the Island. It is one of the headline racing events of the season and helps connect community sailing, fundraising, and competition.

Edgartown Yacht Club’s ’Round-the-Island Race is another major centerpiece. The club describes it as one of yacht racing’s oldest distance races, and it remains part of a larger Edgartown Race Weekend. This is one of those events that really reinforces how deeply sailing tradition runs on the Island.

Vineyard Haven Yacht Club also supports a more active race culture than people might assume at first glance, with junior regattas, adult racing, and connections to the regular Holmes Hole racing.

🏛️ The History and Culture Behind Vineyard Sailing

Martha’s Vineyard Museum preserves and shares the Island’s history, and its collections include materials tied to both island Yacht Clubs.

Ocean Academy and Shenandoah add another layer to that story. Shenandoah has sailed out of Vineyard Haven for decades, and the organization describes it as a long-running educational tradition that has carried thousands of Vineyard children on weeklong voyages. Shenandoah is expected to complete its final season in 2026, making this a transitional moment for that longtime Vineyard tradition.

• Basics: Mink Meadows is a semi-private facility in Vineyard Haven/West Chop that can be played as either a 9-hole or 18-hole experience. Non-members can reserve tee times up to 2 days in advance.

• 2026 season: Open year-round, weather permitting.

• 2026 pricing: Roughly $44–$160 for greens fees depending on season and whether you’re playing 9 or 18 holes; cart fees are extra, and early bird, twilight, and junior pricing are also available.

• Tee time notes: The reservation system runs from 7 AM to 12 AM daily. Single golfers cannot make reservations in advance, but they can access the course on a space-available basis. Cancellations can be made 24 hours ahead without charge.

• Basics: Royal Chappy is a historic 9-hole course on Chappaquiddick with public-facing tee times/day passes, club rentals, pull-cart rentals, and transportation available from the Chappy Ferry with advance notice.

• Booking notes: Tee times are limited by the hour, and your reservation allows you to begin anytime within that one-hour window. Transportation from the Chappy Ferry is available with 1-day advance notice. Islanders can get $25 off with proof of year-round residency using the code listed on the site.

• 2026 pricing: Roughly $65–$80, though this could change

• Range / practice: A public practice range is not listed on the club’s site.

• Membership notes: Royal Chappy also sells memberships. The current public-facing shop pages show an individual membership at $1,400 and a family membership at $2,900, with discounted $40 guest rates for up to four guests.

• Travel Logistics note: Royal Chappy is on Chappaquiddick, so playing there comes with a little more built-in logistics than the other courses. You’ll need to account for getting across on the Chappy Ferry, and if you’re bringing a car, bike, or other gear, that can add both time and cost depending on how you travel. Royal Chappy also notes that transportation from the Chappy Ferry can be arranged with 1 day’s advance notice

Edgartown Golf Club

• Basics: Edgartown Golf Club is a private golf club in Edgartown. The official site says it is open to members and their guests year-round, weather permitting.

• Public access: This is not a practical option for most visitors or casual local golfers unless they are a guest of a member or are participating in one of the annual benefit tournaments the club says are open to all.

Vineyard Golf Club

• Basics: Vineyard Golf Club is a private Edgartown club. Its official membership page says membership is by invitation only and only people nominated by existing members are eligible to apply.

• Public access: The club’s guest information page makes clear that access is for guests of members.

A Few Quick Hits Before You Book

Golf on Martha’s Vineyard is a limited-inventory sport compared to bigger resort destinations, so summer access can tighten up quickly even at the public-facing courses. Farm Neck allows public reservations up to 3 days in advance, while Mink Meadows allows non-members to reserve up to 2 days in advance.

“Public” also does not mean every golf amenity is open in the same way. Farm Neck’s driving range is only available to members and public players warming up before their tee time that day, while Mink Meadows publishes bucket pricing for range use and is the clearest public practice option.

For larger groups, advance booking may be possible in some cases, but summer options are limited. Mink Meadows says outing requests for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations can be made in advance, though access is very restricted during peak season.

If you’re not bringing your own clubs, plan for rental costs to add roughly $45–$90 depending on the course and length of play. Not every course publishes rental pricing as clearly as green fees, so it’s smart to confirm directly when booking.

Martha’s Vineyard has six town libraries, and they’re some of the most useful and underrated community spaces on the island.

🪪 Visitors can borrow from libraries too

Island libraries are not only for year-round residents. Massachusetts residents and property owners can get cards for free, AND visitors can get a temporary card for a one-time $10 fee (with a 10-item limit). You can also use one CLAMS card across the island libraries, which makes it much easier to borrow and request materials.

🧰 You can borrow “things,” not just books

The island libraries have FUN Library of Things lending that is both practical and Vineyard-specific. Depending on the library, you may be able to borrow items like Wi-Fi hotspots, Chromebooks, Nintendo Switches, portable projectors, fishing gear, tools, musical instruments, birding kits, sports gear, clamming-related gear, car battery jumper kits, and so much more.

This is one of the easiest ways to save money, try something new, or solve a random problem without buying more stuff. It’s also one of the fastest ways to realize each library has its own personality!

🧾 They can help with practical life-admin tasks

Some tasks they can help you with are printing, scanning, faxing, public computers, notary services (often by appointment), passport services, museum/local access passes (including Trustees beach parking passes where offered), and Edgartown even has a USPS drop box on site.

🧒 They’re great rainy-day family spaces

Across the island, you’ll find children’s rooms with toys, play areas, storytimes, craft programs, seasonal kids events, and family-friendly outdoor lawn programming.

Depending on the library and season, they offer strong school-break programming for school-aged kids, after school offerings with snacks like in West Tisbury and live music singalongs in Chilmark. It’s a great way to socialize year-round!

🧑‍💻 They can help with meeting spaces

The island libraries vary a lot when it comes to work and meeting-friendly space. Here are a few ways the reservations differ:

• Oak Bluffs has reservable spaces using an online application/form process

• Edgartown offers multiple reservable rooms, and reservations are handled by phone

• West Tisbury offers reservable conference rooms

• Chilmark has a Study Pod for quiet work

• Vineyard Haven’s interim location (during renovation) has stated that it doesn’t currently offer normal table seating (but will in the new, renovated location this summer)

🖼️ They host local artist exhibits

The libraries offer rotating exhibits from local artists. It’s one of the most accessible ways to experience island art. You can stop in to pick up a hold and end up seeing work from a local painter, photographer, or mixed-media artist.

🎶 They double as live music venues

Several libraries host free or low-cost music programming, especially in warmer months. Edgartown has a regular summer lawn concert series. West Tisbury regularly hosts concerts, including monthly jazz. Chilmark has seasonal patio music. Aquinnah has hosted deck concerts.

💸 They’re fine-free for overdue books

Martha’s Vineyard libraries joined the fine-free shift starting January 1, 2020 for overdue materials. You’re still responsible for lost or damaged items, but overdue fines aren’t hanging over your account the same way.

🍳 Libraries host niche classes and hobby groups

A lot of people don’t realize how broad library programming has become beyond books and author talks. Depending on the library and season, programming can include chef-led cooking classes (including Chef Look cooking classes at Edgartown), beginner-friendly mahjong, knitting and crafting circles, and off-site community events like Oak Bluffs game nights at Barn Bowl.

🧘 Libraries also host fitness, wellness, and off-site programs

Library programming also includes a surprising amount of movement and wellness.

Depending on the library and season, that can include weekly free yoga, meditation, strength or movement classes, outdoor programs (including walking groups), off-site children’s swim events, and community partnerships hosted in alternate spaces. This is especially visible in places like West Tisbury (wellness + multi-age programming) and Vineyard Haven, where some children’s programming has been held off-site during the renovation period.

They also offer a lot of virtual programming in the off-season, which can be a great way for part-time residents and repeat visitors to stay connected to island community life when they’re not physically here (and Vineyard Haven’s renovation period has made that especially relevant).

☕ Community food access + everyday extras

Island libraries can be unexpectedly generous in the day-to-day details. Oak Bluffs has a coffee station and is known for free coffee on Wednesdays (with community support). West Tisbury has been connected to community food access efforts, including a freedge/free-fridge model, plus free soup lunches during school breaks for families. Many libraries offer free books at the end of their annual book sale. Stop in and see!

🌈 They host community-centered and equity-minded programming

Depending on the town and season, programming can include cultural celebrations and community speaker events honoring diverse holidays. In Oak Bluffs, that can also include standout cultural programming (like the annual Sankofa-related events). Just browse their events calendars!

Quick Hit Highlights:

• Need a meeting room / quiet work option? Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, West Tisbury have the biggest spaces with easier reserve options.

• Want a kid-friendly rainy-day stop? Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are your best bet down-island, or West Tisbury is worth driving for. OB and + WT have early morning hour options too!

• Want concerts / live music? Edgartown and West Tisbury have monthly recurring programs.

• Need practical errands (printing/notary/passport/etc.)? Edgartown and Oak Bluffs typically offer the most options for this

🎓 MV Libraries 101

• Do they work together? The six libraries are not one islandwide library system. Each town library has its own trustees, staffing, budget, policies, and programming, but all six share CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing), which makes borrowing/requesting materials across libraries easier.

• Who can get a card? In general, Massachusetts residents and property owners can get cards for free, visitors can usually get a temporary card for a one-time $10 fee (with a 10-item limit).

• I’m worried about fines! Island libraries moved to a fine-free model for overdue items starting January 1, 2020, lost/damaged fees for items still apply.

• So are they all the same? The biggest variations are in their policies on room reservations (online form vs phone), meeting room rules, Library of Things categories/restrictions.

Now let’s learn a little bit about each library!

Oak Bluffs Public Library

• Overview: Community-hub, incredibly strong event calendar, one of the most public-facing libraries for families and group activities.

• Logistics: Reservable spaces use an online application/form process.

• Hours: Tue 10–6, Wed 8–5, Thu 10–6, Fri 10–5, Sat 10–4, Sun & Mon closed.

• Standouts: free coffee Wednesdays, Sankofa-related programming, Harvest Festival, Friends annual summer book sale, Putts & Pints (winter), Barn Bowl game nights/off-site community events.

Edgartown Public Library

• Overview: Strong all-around library for practical services, events, and structured room options in one place.

• Logistics: Multiple reservable rooms, some reservations handled by phone, clear posted service details online (printing/scanning/faxing info, etc.), USPS drop box on site, practical to check online before going.

• Hours: Mon 10–5, Tue 10–6, Wed 10–6, Thu 10–5, Fri 10–5, Sat 10–5, Sun closed.

• Standouts: Summer lawn concerts (family-friendly blankets-and-picnic, indoor rain plans), local artist exhibits, chef-led cooking classes/demos, fun Library of Things mix.

Vineyard Haven Public Library

🚧Currently under renovation! Due to complete in May 2026.

• Overview: An everyday-use library for many islanders due to its central location.

• Logistics: The event calendar includes multiple off-site locations (e.g., community buildings) during renovation, check there for specifics.

• Hours: Mon 10–5, Tue 10–6, Wed 10–6, Thu 10–6, Fri 1–5, Sat 10–5, Sun 1–5. (Interim location is 15 Church Street; 200 Main Street building closed for renovation.)

• Standouts: Strong core borrowing/holds use, useful online programming updates, virtual offerings especially relevant during renovation/off-season.

West Tisbury Free Public Library

• Overview: Huge programming range and recurring community use, can feel like a library/community hub/arts-wellness space all at once.

• Logistics: Reservable conference rooms, strong recurring-program rhythm, useful for people planning around ongoing classes/events (not just one-offs).

• Hours: Mon 10–6, Tue 10–6, Wed 10–6, Thu 9–6, Fri 10–5, Sat 9–5, Sun 12–4 between Labor Day and Memorial Day (closed summer Sundays June 1–Aug 31).

• Standouts: Music series (including jazz), wellness/fitness programming, hobby groups/classes, afterschool offerings that may include snacks, broad Library of Things lending, free-fridge connections, free soup lunches during school breaks for families.

Chilmark Free Public Library

• Overview: Smaller, quieter library with a lot of charm, consistently punches above its size in programming and cultural events.

• Logistics: One of the smallest spaces for meetings/quiet work. However, they do have a Study Pod for quiet work with specific reservation rules.

• Hours: Tue 10:30–5, Wed 10:30–6, Thu 10:30–5, Fri 10:30–1:30, Sat 10:30–5, Sun & Mon closed.

• Standouts: Seasonal patio music, speaker/cultural events, local artist exhibits, select storytimes with live music singalongs, lovely historic-feeling building.

Aquinnah Public Library

• Overview: Smallest library on the island, neighborly/calm/community-rooted feel, part of the appeal is the smaller scale.

• Logistics: Smaller space and lighter schedule, still active with community programming, great for simple drop-in use.

• Hours: Tue 12–6, Thu 12–6, Sat 11–4.

• Standouts: Deck concerts/small-scale live performances, family crafts, especially good self-paced craft options.

🗂️ Beyond Public Libraries

Beyond the six town public libraries, Martha’s Vineyard has several book-and-research spaces that are not part of the town-library system - including museum archives, a heritage center with reading rooms, a newspaper archive library, school and genealogy research spaces, and a private membership “reading room.” These places span a wide range of access rules: some are walk-in friendly during public hours, while others are appointment-based or members-only.

Martha’s Vineyard Museum Research Library & Archives

The Research Library is described as a public access point inside the Museum; archival/collections access is structured through staff oversight and scheduled use.

The Carnegie Heritage Center

Open to the public when operating on its seasonal schedule; also functions as a venue for Trust programming and rentals. The Trust describes two reading rooms featuring historical + maritime literature, and notes the Ray Ellis Maritime Collection of original art. It also houses the Living Landmarks exhibition.

Edgartown Reading Room

Edgartown’s Reading Room is a private membership club (not part of the town libraries). If you hear locals reference a ‘men’s reading room,’ this is usually what they mean. Access is members/guests only.

Vineyard Gazette Library

The Gazette library is a public resource and encourages community/scholar use, with staff support. The Vineyard Gazette Library supports research by appointment (start with their request form) and posts weekday hours for coordinated visits.

Chappaquiddick Community Center Library

The CCC describes itself as welcoming year-round and seasonal residents and visitors, and it explicitly references having a library space. CCC states its library includes historical displays and books by Chappaquiddick authors, plus natural history/reference/children’s books.

💡MVacay Library Insider Tips

• You can attend events or visit the library without one, but you’ll need a card to borrow materials.

• Sign up for newsletters: This is one of the easiest ways to get monthly events sent to you! Check calendars before school breaks/weekends as programming can fill up or shift seasonally. Many programs require advance signup online or by phone to ensure space.
